A Fall Season of Sewing!
Available spots
Service Description
A real, hands-on sewing elective built for homeschool life. No patterns, no worksheets — just fabric, a machine, and a project your student actually chooses. Every Fall, homeschool students grades 2-12 meet Wednesday afternoons in the Community Room at Whidbey Coffee in Burlington for a class built around real skill-building, not busywork. Younger students start with fundamentals — first stitches, simple bags, their first zipper — while older students move into more advanced builds: garment construction, alterations, and custom accessories. Everyone works at their own machine, on their own project, at their own pace, so a second grader and a high schooler can genuinely both be in the room at the same time, both exactly as challenged as they need to be. This is a true homeschool-friendly option: a daytime slot that fits into a homeschool schedule, real transferable skills (measuring, cutting, problem-solving, following a project through to completion), and a small group setting where students get real one-on-one guidance instead of a lecture. It's hands-on learning in the truest sense — the kind of class where a phone never comes out, because students are too busy building something. Families aren't locked into this time slot, either. If it fits better, students can instead join one of our grade-matched sessions — Mondays or Wednesdays, 4:00-5:30pm for grades 2-5, or Mondays, 5:30-7:00pm for grades 6-12 — same curriculum, same hands-on approach, different day and time. Taught by Stephanie Philbrick, founder of Positively Sewing — a self-taught designer with 100+ pieces across 10 collections and 17 fashion shows, now teaching real design and construction skills to the next generation. Includes a sewing machine and all fabric, thread, and notions for every project (bring your own machine if you'd rather). 9 sessions, October–December, scheduled around the Burlington-Edison School District calendar. Wednesdays, 2:00-3:30pm, with tuition billed monthly and paid over the 3-month season. Every skill built here is one more reason to make and mend instead of buy and toss. Grades 2-12. Community Room at Whidbey Coffee, Burlington. Sign up today and give your homeschooler a real skill they'll carry for life.
