Anxiety is a collection of physical sensations in the body (feeling unable to breathe, palpitations, wobbly legs, sweating, shaking, for example), as well as anxious thoughts (worries and fears – some of which can seem irrational and illogical). As a result of this people can develop anxious behaviours – these could involve avoiding certain situations (for example: going out, travelling on the tube, meeting friends, driving etc.), as well as repeatedly checking things (the door is locked, for example). Some people will, in addition, experience panic attacks. Worrying about having a panic attack can increase anxiety, which, unfortunately, makes the panic attacks even more likely to happen. It becomes a vicious circle.
Although anxiety is very common, many people, understandably, do not like to talk about it, and if they do, it is difficult for their friend or partner to know how to deal with it or what to do, and so it can be a very isolating condition. Many clients worry that they are really going mad.
Symptoms of anxiety can sometimes seem to occur for no apparent reason, and can take over your life. There is a sense of having no control over what happens and even feeling like you may die.
However severe these symptoms may be, it IS possible to make a full recovery.

Usually 5 sessions are needed over two to three months. There are some between session assignments, that you will be asked to do and some guidelines to follow throughout the programme. All of these are designed to fit together like pieces of a jigsaw. After the initial session, each one and a half hour session builds on the success of the last and by the last session most people are feeling significantly better. About a month after the end of the programme of treatment, you will be invited back for a review, to make sure everything is still on track..
