What is it ?
EFT is a bit like acupuncture without the needles. It is often thought of as a complimentary therapy and based on the idea that emotions can become stuck in the body's energy meridians. It involves “tapping” a series of energy meridian points on the body whilst talking through various thoughts and feelings around an issue. The tapping is usually demonstrated by the therapist and done by the client. In other words, the therapist does not have to touch the client - the client does their own “tapping”.
Originally developed in the US from Thought field Therapy (TFT) in the 1990's it has been hailed as a universal healing aid. Written about in the national press, it has also been demonstrated on BBC radio. It is often used as an adjunct to treatment for habits, fears and phobias. Paul McKenna famously mentions it in his books as a way to reduce cravings for cigarettes and fattening foods.
What happens in a session?
Carried out fully clothed it involves the client tapping on their own acupuncture pressure points (with the guidance of the therapist) in a rhythmic sequence whilst simultaneously stating different thoughts, beliefs and feelings about an issue. EFT helps restructure the beliefs and thoughts, it can reduce and clear difficult emotions, typically resulting in fast results over just a few sessions.
